What is Spinal Energetics?

Most people come to me after trying everything — from physical therapy and massage to talk therapy and lifestyle changes — and still feeling like something’s off. Maybe they’re dealing with chronic pain (like hip or upper back tension), anxiety that won’t let up, or just a deep sense that they’re stuck in old patterns.

Spinal Energetics is a somatic practice that works with your nervous system, breath, and energy to help your body release what it’s been holding onto — whether that’s physical tension, emotional overwhelm, or energetic heaviness. I don’t force or fix anything. Instead, I support your system in letting go, so you can feel more regulated, grounded, and like yourself again.

People often tell me after a session that they feel lighter, more in their body, and clearer than they’ve felt in a long time. It’s not about doing more — it’s about finally allowing your body to exhale.

Spinal Energetics is a modality developed by Chiropractor and Counsellor Dr Sarah Jane. It is influenced by various modalities, such as Network Spinal, Alpha Alignment, Shamanism, Inner Dance, Reiki, Esoteric Acupuncture, Craniosacral Therapy, Transpersonal Psychotherapy, Trauma Release and Pranayama. With the incorporation of philosophies of Buddhism, Hinduism, Chinese Medicine, Yogic and Meditative traditions.

How Do Virtual Sessions Work?

If you told me two years ago that I’d be receiving — and eventually facilitating — energy healing work online, trust me, I wouldn’t have believed you.

I first discovered Spinal Energetics on Instagram in 2024, when there weren’t any practitioners in Massachusetts. My only options were to travel or try an online session… and I chose the latter. I booked a virtual session — a little skeptical, honestly — and was blown away by the experience. The practitioner even sent me a recording afterward, and I watched myself moving and releasing in response to what she was doing with her hands — from a completely different state.

That’s when it really clicked: Spinal Energetics isn’t about touch — it’s about energy, breath, intention, and your body’s own ability to release stored tension. And that process can happen from anywhere.

In fact, online sessions can actually feel even more supportive. Being in the comfort of your own home allows your nervous system to soften and open more easily, which can make the work even deeper. You can lie down in your own space, stay cozy, and let your body guide the process.

How to Set Up for a Virtual Session

Spinal Energetics works beautifully online — all you need is a quiet space, a stable setup, and a little time just for you. Here’s how to prepare:

1. Find a Quiet, Private Space

Choose a room where you won’t be interrupted by people, pets, or distractions. This is your time to be fully in your experience — and your nervous system will thank you for the spaciousness.

2. Decide How You’ll Lie Down

Most clients lie face up on a bed, couch, or yoga mat on the floor. If you have a massage table and prefer to lie face down, that’s totally fine too.

3. Set Up Your Camera

Use a phone, iPad, or laptop with video, audio, and strong Wi-Fi.

→ Place your device in landscape (horizontal) mode, and angle it far enough away so I can see your whole body from head to toe.

4. Gather What You Need to Feel Comfortable

  • Pillows or a bolster (especially under your knees if lying face up)

  • Tissues (for emotional release)

  • Headphones (optional, but can deepen the experience)

  • A glass of water for afterward

FAQs

  • Not usually. Spinal Energetics is a nervous system-based practice, which means it works best with consistency over time. Just like it took repetition for your system to learn patterns of stress, tension, or shutdown — it also takes repetition to gently unlearn those patterns and build new, more supportive ones.

We typically recommend starting with 3 to 5 sessions, spaced about two weeks apart. This gives your system time to integrate between sessions while still maintaining momentum.

After that, sessions often shift into more of a maintenance rhythm — maybe once a month or whenever you’re navigating an acute phase of stress, pain, or emotional overwhelm. Everyone’s journey looks different, and we’ll adjust the frequency based on what your body needs.

  • Everyone processes Spinal Energetics differently, and there’s no one “right” way to feel afterward. Your experience depends on how your nervous system is ready to release and integrate.

Some people — myself included — can feel a bit like they’ve been hit by an energetic wave. You might feel emotional, tired, sore, anxious, sensitive, or even like you’re processing a “healing hangover.” Sometimes, things may feel worse before they feel better — not because something went wrong, but because old emotions, stress, or pain are finally surfacing to be processed rather than stored away again. This is a sign that your body is doing the work.

Others leave a session feeling deeply grounded, clear-headed, blissed out, or like a weight has been lifted. That can last for hours or even days.

Both responses are completely normal. Neither is better or more “successful” — they’re simply different ways your nervous system might respond as it starts to shift and let go of what it’s been carrying.

  • After a Spinal Energetics session, the most important thing you can do is listen to your body — which, for many of us, is a practice in itself. It may feel unfamiliar at first to ask, What do I need right now? and actually wait for an answer. That’s okay. Part of this work is rebuilding that connection and trust with your body.

We generally don’t recommend scheduling other nervous system or energy healing sessions within the first 72 hours after Spinal Energetics. Some people may need even more time — up to two weeks — to fully integrate the session. Trust your pace.

This is also a beautiful time to lean into extra TLC and grounding practices. Here are a few supportive options:

    • Gentle movement like yoga or stretching

    • Meditations or breath awareness

    • A warm bath or shower

    • Journaling or talking to a therapist

    • Walking, hiking, or simply sitting outside

    • Anything that feels soothing, supportive, or helps you exhale

Most importantly, just be mindful that your system may be more sensitive than usual — and give yourself space to feel, rest, and process whatever wants to move through.

  • No two Spinal Energetics sessions are ever the same — even for the same person. Your experience depends on how your nervous system is ready to release tension that day, and there are a couple of different ways that can show up.

One is what we call an extroverted response — this is what you often see on Instagram because it’s dynamic and visually engaging. It might look like spontaneous movement: your body stretching, twisting, arching, or even doing things that resemble yoga poses. This is your body physically unwinding stored tension and patterns.

The other is an introverted response, which is just as powerful but looks much more still on the outside. You may feel internal shifts like tingling, warmth, pulsing, or waves of energy. You might see colors, have vivid memories or visualizations, receive intuitive messages, or simply feel a deep sense of calm and presence.

Neither response is better than the other — they’re just different ways your system processes. I’ve seen clients go from very extroverted in one session to completely introverted in the next. It all depends on what your body needs in the moment.
